Introducing My Rootine: a series highlighting how members of the Rootine community incorporate healthy living into their daily routines.
Meet Alex Iskold. As co-founder and Managing Partner at 2048 Ventures, previous managing director of techstars NYC, and writer of a top startup blog called Startup Hacks, Alex has a packed schedule. To make sure he is performing at his best at work and at home he sticks to a routine that maintains his health and energy.
What does his routine look like? learn more below.
What his morning Rootine is:
I wake up and meditate for 10 minutes using the Calm app. I have been doing this pretty much every day since the new year. After that I make Matcha or another tea. Right after tea I exercise. Lastly, drop off kids at school and go to work.
What he likes to eat to start his day:
I drink water and tea, typically Matcha or another kind. I fast until lunch, so don't have food in the morning.
How he integrates exercise into his day:
My goal is to exercise every single day. I end up exercising 5-7 times a week. To make it happen, I basically exercise first thing in the morning. I mix yoga, biking, stairmaster and weights. I used to do a lot of running before but can't do it post injury.
How he handles travel:
I pretty much stick with my routine when I travel, I always exercise first thing in the morning and fast until lunch.
His inspiration for his Rootine:
I gradually came to my routine by reading a lot of literary and trial an error. I am inspired by the bio hacking community and health podcasts. Also have been eating mostly vegan for the last 4 years inspired by the book called How NOT to die.
His philosophy on staying healthy:
My philosophy is self-care. I've blogged about it and live by my own advice. I don't drink or smoke, I eat mostly vegan, I exercise daily, meditate and fast. I think doing all of this keeps me in decent shape and helps me be my best for my family and for my work.
New health trends he is excited about:
I am super excited about biohacking, because it is a scientific approach to optimizing your body. My latest addition over a year ago, was fasting. New things I am excited about is understanding and controlling my sleep better and learning how to optimize my breathing.
How he is keeping up his routine while working from home:
I've kept up with my routine pretty consistently. I've added daily walks for 30 or 60 minutes in addition to all of the above. We are also building out our home gym. In addition to the treadmill that we had, we just bought a bike and also just ordered rowing machine. We are lucky to be able to fit all of this stuff in our basement. My advice is regardless of your home situation to really prioritize healthy habits. I hear many people increasing alcohol consumption, being really stressed and depressed. My advice is to push yourself really hard into the healthy habits to maintain sanity and stay in shape through these tough times.
